Honolulu Zoo's Military Appreciation Day
The Military Appreciation Day, which was held at the Honolulu Zoo, was intended to thank the Armed Forces and their families for their services by entertaining them and giving them a fun way to spend quality time with each other. At this event, service members and their families enjoyed some social recreation activities, one of them being a demonstration of Team Kika Mana's 2009 robot, the IngBot. The audience got the chance to interact with the robot while also expanding their knowledge of science and technology.

Liliha Library Teen Read Week
The theme for 2009’s Teen Read Week was Reading Beyond Reality, which made it perfect to show the general public the extent science reaches into. Most people still don’t know what young adults are able to do and how quickly science and technology is advancing. Seeing McKinley Robotics’ creations have expanded the community’s point of views on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).

Assistant U.S. Secretary of Education
In December 2009, the U.S. Secretary of Education, Mr. Cunningham, visited Hawaii and made a stop at President William McKinley High School. During his visitation at our school, the McKinley Robotics Team organized a demonstration to show what we were involved in. We demonstrated our 2009 VEX and FIRST robots to show the passion our team members have for STEM education and all that it stands for (science, technology, engineering, mathematics).

McKinley High School’s Special Assembly
Every year, McKinley High School nominates one alumnus to join their fellow alumni in the Hall of Honor which recognizes and celebrates these nominees’ achievements. This year was a special exception because there was an unfortunate lack of nominees. Not to be deterred by this setback, McKinley High decided to rehonor previous years' nominees in a well-organized presentation using the nominees' achievements to educate the student body about the many programs offered at McKinley. One of those programs was the McKinley Robotics Team, so we got the chance to wow an audience of over 500 students and faculty members with a demonstration of our 2008 and 2009 FIRST robots and our 2009 VEX robots. We explained how robotics tied in with science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers, something that could benefit most of the students present. After the assembly, we were approached by many teachers and students, who were very curious about our program and wanted to learn more.
