    Accomplishment  1 - Bearing Blocks

    Four
days have passed since the FIRST Robotic Kickoff and we were almost done with our shafts and bearing blocks, only to be delayed slightly by a little mistake we've made when fabricating the blocks. It was when we tried to put the bearings into the blocks have we found the center hole of the blocks slightly undersized for the bearings.

our beautiful but undersized bearing blocks

So what we did to solve the problem was enlarging the center holes with a perfect size reamer on the mill.

After modifying the bearing blocks, we tapped two holes where the screws go into the blocks. Many of our new team members gained a first hand experience on the hand tapper.

Next we put the dowel pins into the blocks with a press, two per set of blocks.

Then, we cleaned the bearing blocks and the bearings with Acetone. (& Mr. Ing accidentally spilled the solution!)

Finally we pressed the bearings into the now-perfectly-sized center holes of the bearing blocks.

    Our beautifully finished bearing blocks!

& then our bearing blocks are done!

Accomplishment 2 - Fixing the chain on our Kit Bot

Our driver Sam & controller Erica suggested that we tighten the chain on the Kit Bot so that it gives better performance.

    What We Did:
Instead of taking apart the whole chassis, we unscrewed the gear boxes/transmissions (on both side) which have a shaft and sprockets that line the chain and raised them higher on the chassis. We elevated the gear boxes by the height of three washers and used longer screws to fasten the gear boxes back on the chassis. This idea was generated by our smart mentor, Mr. Ing.

    Accomplishment 3 - Trailer's hitch

Mr. Tom, our new mentor came in around 6:30pm with a metal tube and some blueprint papers in his hand. He was going to make the trailer's hitch. Here are some illustration.
